HP aims to launch low-power ‘Moonshot’ server next quarter - daviswallard1976

Hewlett-Packard's foremost soft-power server for hyperscale computing environments, developed subordinate a projection it calls Moonshot, will progress sales agreement next tail, CEO Meg Whitman said last workweek.

Project Moonshot is an effort to build low-king servers based on alternatives to Intel's Xeon processors for enjoyment in mega data centers wish those operated by Facebook and Google.

HP announced the contrive in 2022, and the first server platform it talked about, known A Redstone, was to atomic number 4 supported an ARM-type processor from Calxeda.

HP switched gears last yr, all the same, and showed another Throw Moonshot host design dubbed Gemini, the first interlingual rendition of which was to be supported connected an Intel Atom processor.

It could be that Atom server that HP plans to release adjacent quarter, though Whitman didn't say and an HP interpreter declined to comment. The server would be a bit behind schedule, since an HP enforcement originally said Gemini would personify out late last class.

Naive servers

"We expect this to really overturn the economics of the data center with an only new category of server that consumes adequate 89 percent less energy, 94 percent less space and 63 percent less cost than a traditional x86 server environment," Whitman said connected Horsepower's earnings call Thursday.

Information technology's Horsepower's attempt to capitalize on a growing market for same low-powerfulness servers used away companies delivering online services on a large scale. Other players include Dingle, which was quick to jump on the market, and AMD, which bought low-power waiter vendor SeaMicro and plans to license its technology to other computer makers.

The servers aren't premeditated to run traditional enterprise applications, however. They're intended for programs graphic specially for such environments, including Web applications and big data software program such A Hadoop.

Gemini gets its mightiness savings from a new Intel Atom Saratoga chip known arsenic Centerton, which Intel has said consumes 6 Isaac Watts of power, far less than its Xeon chips. Calxeda isn't necessarily out in the cold, however: HP said Twins uses a "processor cartridge" that will allow it to use different processor types in the future.
