How To Draw A Baby Face

The hardest part of nailing down a face is using the right proportions. Once you go that part, drawing faces volition be easy peasy!

For me, the hardest part was always drawing the optics in the correct size and correct place. We look at drawings or photos and it looks so like shooting fish in a barrel, but then, when it's our plough, everything is 10x harder.

Like in everything, it all comes down to practice. Start with shapes, learn the proportions.

Practice this a few times and, y'all'll run into that, soon, drawing merely the caput will be as like shooting fish in a barrel as tying your own shoes!

Learn how to Draw a Face by working with the right proportions! Here's a step by step guide.

Of class, I'm going to assistance you out and requite y'all a step-by-step procedure on how to draw a face up. From Basic Shapes and each feature of the confront, similar the eyes, olfactory organ, oral fissure, etc. Adding details, immature and old faces and even drawing the face in different views!

Buckle upwardly and get your sketchbook ready. We're doing this!

What You Demand To Know Nigh Drawing Faces

It's all nigh the shapes. Everything in a cartoon is virtually shapes.

You look at a face as its whole. But I'll await at it and I'll endeavor to effigy out into what shapes tin can I put it down, so I can easily describe it.

Circles, squares, rectangles and guidelines, a puzzle for me to figure out.

Similar I said, we're going through a step by step guide for each feature of the face.

I'm going to show you the procedure I apply when learning to draw new things and hopefully, it volition be most useful to you!

Y'all tin do this with any medium yous'd adopt.

Either with a sketchbook along with some pencils or even pens or grab your cartoon tablet and pc. Anything will piece of work, you but need to come forth with your motivation and start.

Basic Face Proportions

Generally speaking, we're dividing the face into 3 equal parts.

Subsequently drawing our chief shapes of the head, we demand to be sure that everything will be in the right places.

For this, there are 3 principal spaces yous might want to add:

  • one goes from the hairline to our forehead
  • another from the brow to the nose
  • and finally, olfactory organ to chin

This might sound disruptive, but here's an example:

Here are the basic proportions that you need to know when drawing a face!

Now, all we are missing is where our eyes, ears, and oral fissure will be.

But we'll become there in a 2d, then follow me and we'll build up our caput and face, one pace at a time!

Complete Pace by Pace Guide on Drawing Faces

If you'd like to see all of this and much more than on Effigy Drawing in video format, check out my premium course on Gumroad!

Either way, earlier we begin:

Do your hand stretches, organize your workspace, bring some water and snacks if you wish to. The course will begin shortly!

Draw The Basic Shapes

Alright, let's start very unproblematic.

On your page, draw a circumvolve. If you find it hard to draw a perfect circle, here'southward a tip: draw a horizontal and vertical line, perpendicular to each other, crossing at the center.

If you adopt, use a ruler. But I'd say to do this without it. Your lines don't demand to be 100% perfect and every bit y'all practice, you'll see that they'll become better with fourth dimension.

Now that yous have your lines, draw the circle around them.

Alternatively, you can only practice a few circles on your page until y'all become the hang of information technology. First with smaller circles and increase their size as you go.

Start by drawing a circle when drawing a face.

Now the adjacent step is to draw a square within our circle.

This might sound weird, but this square will determine the width of our face.

Nosotros're doing a pretty default face at the moment, merely later on, we'll talk well-nigh how you can use your shapes, to describe different faces!

Alright, one-half of our caput is washed, now we need to find our chin.

Draw a vertical line, following the one yous did for the circumvolve, going downwardly, with the same altitude as the upper half of the face up.

Where the line ends, that's where our chin will be!

Draw a square inside the face to know where the jaw is.

At present, all nosotros demand is to connect the points and we accept our caput washed. Next all nosotros need to add is our guidelines for all the features.

Pretty simple correct?

Now yous but demand to practice this shapes and, gradually, you'll commencement losing some guidelines, because you don't demand them anymore. Intuitively you'll already know where everything is!

Describe The Eyes and Eyebrows

It's fourth dimension to first adding features to our face up.

Let's start from top to lesser.

Our quest now is to find where our eyes and eyebrows will be. Let's accept a wait at what we have so far.

At present, for the eyebrows, our line is already at that place. Our brow line is where we'll draw the eyebrows.

For the optics, at that place isn't much for usa to exercise here either.

Get a flake beneath the eyebrows and make a new line, this is where the eyes will be.

Set a line for the Eyebrows and the Eyes right below.

The Eyes

To help you lot on their location, we can add some guidelines here too.

Remember that square we drew at the beginning? Let's divide each half of the foursquare in two.

Two vertical lines, going down. These lines decide the eye of each eye.

Now, all nosotros need to practise is to add our eye shapes in their places.

Either an oval and almond shape volition work. Meet what works best for you.

Here's how you find the position of the eyes when drawing a face

Our next step is to fill up our eyes.

Add the pupil and iris, the upper eyelid and some eyelashes if you lot wish!

Draw the eyes on the face, simple shapes!

Y'all tin can practice these as stylized as you desire or go along it very simple.

More cartoonish or more realistic. Try out different things and experiment!

While you're learning and improving your faces, y'all're also developing your own style and discovering what and how yous like to draw!

The Eyebrows

The eyebrows tin can be very simple or total of detail.

Information technology all comes down to your taste and style. I tend to draw my eyebrows with a unmarried line. But, if you prefer, you can draw them, hair by hair.

Then, of grade, yous can go with several styles, from very tiny to very thick and bushy eyebrows.

You can draw the eyebrows very simply or with lots of details, totally up to you.

As their identify, we depict them right higher up the eyes, the line resting in that location is our guideline.

They can go a bit further than the eyes, but the starting indicate is the same.

Usually, I start from inside the confront, I feel that it's easier to go from there.

We draw an biconvex line, turn it effectually and nosotros close our shape where nosotros began. Remember that the eyebrows are thicker on the inside and become thinner on the ends of information technology.

Here's the position of the eyebrow in the face, just above the eye.

Lovely, the face is starting to look great!

Draw The Olfactory organ

Next in the list is the olfactory organ.

We already know where it ends, our 2nd guideline, later the brow. But where does it begin?

Don't worry, we don't need to add more lines… yet! Our olfactory organ starts at the same line every bit our eyebrows.

Every bit for its width, information technology volition go as far as the starting bespeak of our eyes. Let's practice some base shapes offset:

Drawing the nose is easy! Here's how you can do it.

Now we only demand to sketch out our nose.

In that location's a variety of styles yous can go about here. I embrace, in a video, the main ones yous can do, so if you're interested, bank check out my Figure Drawing course on Gumroad!

As for the size of the olfactory organ, these are only guidelines, feel gratis to exaggerate your noses or eyes every bit you wish. Especially if you're doing a more cartoonish style!

Sketch the nose in your face drawing.

Describe The Mouth

We're almost done!

For the oral cavity, we don't have any guideline yet, so permit's commencement with that.

Find the middle point between the olfactory organ line and the chin. Now draw a horizontal line.

We found our oral cavity!

Draw a line halfway from the nose and the chin to find the mouth!

Now above this line, we'll have our upper lip and below, the bottom lip.

Once again, in that location are several types of lips, thinner or thicker, long lips or very small. Just the default shapes are an Yard shape for the upper lip and an arch for the bottom.

Similar this:

The upper lip of the mouth has an M shape, like this.

Once more, endeavor out different styles and shapes.

Experimenting is e'er the all-time part of cartoon, and then have fun with it!

Draw The Ears

We've reached the last footstep of cartoon the face up.

All nosotros are missing now is the ears!

I admit, drawing ears in a front view isn't the about entertaining, but it is too very simple.

Equally for their location, very like shooting fish in a barrel too: draw an oval shape, starting in our optics line, its highest indicate rests on the brow line and lowest indicate on the olfactory organ line.

The ears are easy to locate when drawing the face, here's how.

And in that location information technology is, 90% of our ear is down. At present we but need to add together some details, mostly curves hither and there:

Feel free to try out different styles and ways to draw the features.

Well done! That's a good looking face.

Adding Details And Aging

Now that yous know how to draw a complete face up, we can add some details!

Depending on whether y'all're drawing a younger grapheme or older, the face will look different.

An aging face volition take some wrinkles for example!

Apart from that, there are other details you tin can add together to give more than personality to your graphic symbol: moles, nativity signs, freckles, scars, among others.

If you're cartoon male characters, in that location's another addition for you: beards!

There are dozens of styles to become for: long, short, dissimilar designs, mustache just, beards only or a mix of both!

Details Can Make or Break Your Character

Don't overdo it though!

Details are nice, but yous can't easily use everything in 1 character. It can be too messy and disruptive. Likewise, the signal of calculation some details is so that people will recognize your grapheme through unique details.

If you're unsure on how to get virtually your characters, effort out different versions. Effort out several things and meet what you call back works best with their personality.

Once you've called how your grapheme volition look, draw them in different poses, locations, actions and examination them, so you're certain that's the wait yous want!

Drawing One-time Faces

Every bit I said before, if you want to draw someone older, you might want to add some wrinkles and even different colored spots and signs over the face up.

Every bit we historic period, our skin changes. Employ photograph references if needed!

The most mutual wrinkles will show on the eyes and around the mouth.

When drawing old faces, remember to add wrinkles and to use photo references to help you!

But, one time once again, experience complimentary to exaggerate your lines! Fifty-fifty in existent life, people age differently and will look different!

Drawing Young Faces

For immature people, well there are several stages and there's a lot to play with!

Let's say you want to draw a infant or a kid. Usually, we go for actually round shapes, the youngest, the chubbiest!

Play with those shapes every bit much every bit you lot want.

Once again, look upwardly some reference images and describe from them.

As for moles or freckles, those tend to appear a bit later on.

The same goes for wrinkles, except, if you're going for a very chubby baby, so you can add together some lines on the forehead and very round cheeks.

For young faces like Babies, draw rounder faces with bigger eyes!

Children are a mix of babies and teens.

There's less roundness to their faces, merely it'southward still at that place.

When drawing both babies and children, we too tend to describe very big eyes, almost too big. It makes them look cuter and children's eyes look always a bit bigger than when we're older and very vibrant.

Look for this kind of details on photographs from when you lot were a kid, for example. Take advantage of these little features and exaggerate them in your drawings!

Every bit for scars, well it's something you can start adding when drawing both children and teens.

If your grapheme is the adventurer and energetic type, and so mayhap a scar or other would fit. I for certain know some people where their scar's stories begin with "When I was a child…" and end with "And that's how I got this one!"

Teens can exist really fun as well.

This is when the terrible acne starts to appear! You can add some pimples if you retrieve it fits your graphic symbol.

On another note: beards! At a sure age, boys first growing facial hair, and then yous tin start playing with this idea too by giving them modest stubbles or random tiny hairs.

Experimenting With Shapes

Alright, and then like I said before, nosotros drew our face in a very default way.

Those are the proportions you want to become when drawing a realistic portrait. But if you lot're interested and going for a more than cartoonish approach, you tin can get beyond these proportions!

Exaggerate the sizes of each feature and try out dissimilar face shapes. Basically, the just thing that usually doesn't modify is the position of each characteristic. Unless you're going for a Picasso approach of course!

Try different shapes, a triangle for example!

Instead of a circle and square, endeavour to use a triangle. Either upward or upside down. Come across the results that you lot go! A triangle will probably requite you a more caricature style and a more elongated face up.

If you really want to play with a very long face up, try a rectangle or a very long triangle!

What about a pentagon? Either upright or inverted.

This one can give u.s.a. very interesting face shapes.

Take the time to pracitce different head shapes. Each shape can lead to very interesting new characters!

You already have your bases and now how to do a face.

Now it's time to experiment and endeavour out different formats.

Is your character a very sturdy human, mayhap a boxer? And so draw a very foursquare face up.

Are you drawing someone with a very big belly? So draw a very round face to friction match!

There are thousands of options and y'all are free to effort any you like!

If you don't similar the consequence, try over again or become with some other shape. You larn with these experiences and not simply you're learning unlike approaches when drawing, y'all're likewise improving your drawing skills.

Then, go on practicing and have fun with your characters!

Drawing Faces At Different Angles

Nosotros've done our confront in a front view, simply y'all might want to depict your characters in other positions. Particularly if you want to make a turn around sheet of your character!

Worry non, for I volition not leave y'all hanging!

Allow's become through a few more tutorials on how to draw faces in different angles.

Side View

Our first shape here will be the same equally earlier. Nosotros beginning with a circle!

Once again, if yous wish, draw two lines, crossing each other in the middle and and so connect everything together. Actually, I'd say to depict your circumvolve like this, considering you lot'll need them subsequently.

They are very important guidelines!

To draw the face from the side, we start with a circle as well.

Alright, so we have half of our head done. At present, from the bottom of our vertical line, nosotros draw an oblique line, like then:

Drawing a face to the side means the jaw will be a slanted or oblique line.

This is our chin and jawline!

Finally, nosotros merely need to shut this shape. From the edge of our circumvolve, on the right side, draw a vertical line until it touches the line nosotros just did.

Connect the jaw line with the circle to draw the front of the face.

Our main shapes are washed.

At present it's time to kickoff finding where each feature of the confront is!

This time, we're starting from the bottom. Simply before that, remember how we divided the head into three equal parts before? Allow's practise the same here!

Here are the general dimensions of the face when seen from the side

At present that's washed, from the point where our jawline starts, permit's draw a horizontal line.

This is where our mouth will exist! At the edge of our head.

Similar last time, the upper lip should exist above this line and the bottom lip, beneath.

Usually, the upper lip besides goes a bit forwards than the bottom lip. But once again, it all depends on how y'all want your graphic symbol to be!

Start sketching the jaw and mouth, pretty simply!

Next, is the nose.

Nosotros already have our line here, where the terminate of the olfactory organ will sit. To assistance y'all, earlier detailing and drawing a finished nose, depict a triangle, going out of the head.

This is where your nose should go.

The nose looks like a triangle when being drawn from the side.

Before drawing the eyes, permit's do the ears start.

Since we're seeing the head from but one side, nosotros can but see one ear. Like before, the lowest part of the ear volition seat on the guideline we did for the olfactory organ and the highest part touches the forehead line.

This time we tin also see more details of the ear.

I normally go for a very simple ear, simply feel free to add all the curves that you come across on your ear!

When drawing the ears from the side, remember to add some details!

As for the eyes, nosotros can also run across only ane of them and its shape volition too be very different than before. Its placement is the same as before, the central horizontal line on our circle!

For its shape, instead of a circle or almond shape, nosotros draw a cone.

Now we just demand to add details similar the student, iris, eyelashes and a bit of the upper eyelid.

The eyes have a cone shade when drawing a face from the side.

We're almost done and this last part is rather simple!

We only need to add our eyebrow.

Nosotros already have a identify for it and at present we merely demand to draw an biconvex line, a bit more tilted in the front and we're done!

The eyebrow can once again be as simple or as complex as you want.

3/4 View

This i is ordinarily the one that well-nigh people take difficulty with. This is why I did a whole department with 10 videos on my figure drawing course, simply for drawing a complete head in a iii/4 view!

A part of the confront is hidden, just non completely, so getting the proportions right tin exist hard.

Let's commencement with our circle!

So far, we've always been drawing straight lines, this time we need a curved one. From the top of the circle, going all the way down.

Drawing a Face or Head in a three quarters view can be somewhat complicated, so let me guide you step by step!

Now, to brand things a bit easier, let'south depict a rectangle, starting from the hairline, downwards to the nose.

This way we take about a complete shape of our head, plus two of our principal guidelines!

Draw a rectangle on the head to make it easier to find the features of the face.

Now, nosotros need to add together our mentum line, so from the nose line, get down the same distance equally yous accept from the brow to the olfactory organ.

Finally, we just need to connect the dots!

Add the chin line to your three quarters view of the face.

Time to fill everything up!

Starting with the eyebrows, everything has a bit of a 3D experience right now, so it'due south similar we have biconvex guidelines. One of the eyebrows is completely seen, while the other is cut.

The shapes are the same as before though!

start working the main lines of the head and face.

Permit's draw the ear now, so nosotros tin notice the line for our eyes.

This time, nosotros can simply see 1 ear as well. Draw an oval shape, where its higher point touches the brow line and the everyman, the olfactory organ line. Just like we skillful before!

Now just add together the details.

The ear here is done very similarly to when we drew it on a side view.

The eyebrows and ears can be simply drawn like this.

Next is the eyes, probably the one people accept the most issues with.

Its line goes right below the brow line, same distance, and place as we did before.

Like in a front view, we draw almond shapes for the eyes.

The eye that is uttermost from u.s.a. is normally a bit hidden from the nose, so have that into consideration!

The eyes look a bit more slanted in a three quarters view.

Now it'due south time to draw the olfactory organ.

We can merely see one of the nostrils, so the shape here will exist a triangle, similar to the one nosotros drew in a side view.

Like I mentioned earlier, the nose is in front of i of the eyes, so be certain to draw that line on top, connecting to the eyebrow.

The nose is very easy to draw in a three quarters view, a simple slanted triangle.

Finally, nosotros draw the mouth, similar to the one in the front end view.

An "1000" shape for the upper lip and an arch for the lesser lip.

The but difference here is that ane of the sides of your lips will appear smaller since a role of the face is turned away from usa.

The mouth can be tricky to draw, if you're having trouble, look up photo references!

Looking Up

Every shape is generally the aforementioned when looking up, the merely difference here is that we draw more arched guidelines, peculiarly for the eyes.

I'm going to get out here an example, so it's easier to sympathise!

Drawing someone looking up can be pretty fun!

Looking Downward

Same as before, except that this time, our lines arch in the opposite direction.

Again, allow's come across what I mean by this with an example:

When people are looking down, the face features follow the lines!

Different Expressions, Dissimilar Confront Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression you're going for, the face will have unlike shapes.

For example, if you're drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long "O" for the mouth, and so the face will await more elongated.

On the other hand, if you're drawing someone angry, where the optics and eyebrows grow close together and a airtight mouth, possibly showing some teeth. Then we have the contrary effect.

Depending on the expressions your character is making, the face will move accordingly!

Put yourself in front of a mirror and practice your expressions.

Take photos if yous need to! Then, you'll have tons of references for you to use in your drawings. If you prefer, you can even trace on elevation of your photos, and then you can see clearly the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression you lot're making!

Summing It Up

Uff, that was a lot of learning!

But, as you tin can see, the important parts you lot need to retain when cartoon faces are proportions and shapes.

Once you nail those down, everything else comes hands.

As always, exercise a lot. In the offset, practice only the shapes and guidelines if needed. Afterwards a few tries, you'll see that everything will come up more intuitively.

If you prefer to run across these steps in video format, check my grade on Figure Drawing over on Gumroad. Together, we tin can become over drawing a face, dissimilar types of ears, mouths, noses, etc, in different views!
